We are the MDP Senior Caucus, chartered in January 2020.
As Founder and Chairperson of the Senior Caucus, I was surprised when I wanted to join a group with common goals of saving Democracy and Voter’s Rights, not to find a Senior Caucus.
As a newly retired Counselor, and after living through the last horrible years of political upheaval, I learned that there was no specific Caucus for Seniors. made an application to identify and become a Senior Caucus in 2021. We held our first Board meeting and election in August 2021. We were chartered in January 2022.
~ Founder and Chairperson Linda Michaels Gruber
Our goal of the caucus is to effect public policy by bringing focus and accountability to senior issues, and by working to elect public officials who support those efforts.
Seniors are among those most adversely affected by the policies and acts of Republican administrations and congressional and legislative majorities in Washington DC and Lansing.
The Senior Caucus will work toward educating and informing Seniors on the issues involved in local, county, state and national elections and removing barriers that may prevent them from exercising their right and opportunity to vote in these elections. The Senior Caucus will give a voice to Seniors within the Michigan Democratic Party.
Keeping in line with our goals, we recently developed a Resolution to Fight Ageism which Seniors and Persons with Disabilities are most effected.
We, as a Caucus reach out and participate in other MDP Caucuses and any of their Senior Members are welcome to join our Caucus as well.
We are developing a committee to prepare a panel of our sister Caucuses to address Discrimination and hate crimes with the goal of issuing a resolution against discrimination.
We acknowledge “The State of Michigan occupies the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of the Anishinaabek- Three Fires Confederacy, the Odawa (Ottawa), Ojibwe (Chippewa), and Bodewadmi (Potawatomi).
The Michigan Democratic Party recognizes historic Indigenous communities in Michigan and those forcibly removed from their homelands.
We further recognize the ongoing relationship of dependence upon, and respect for, all living beings of earth, sky, and water. In offering this land acknowledgment, we affirm Indigenous sovereignty, history, and experiences.”

We always meet on zoom to include our members from upper and lower Michigan.
We meet on the third Wednesday every other month as a Board of Directors. The full membership meets with us four times a year.
We also hold “Learn over Zoom” educational talks several times a year presenting topics that are of interest to our membership. Our first Zoom Seminar addressed cyber security and how to protect ourselves.
We frequently have guest speaker at our meetings. Our own Attorney General Dana Nessel presented an hour-long informational address with videos identifying issues of scamming, fraud, and many other ways to protect yourself. It was educational and humorous.
More details are explained in the MDP Senior Caucus Bylaws.
If you are looking for a way to stay up on legislation that impacts you, have Senior concerns or just want to be part of a group that has fun and learns as they age forcefully for democracy, this group is for you.
